🐟 Adopt the Village – A Holistic Aquaculture Development Model

“Adopt the Village” in the context of aquaculture is a focused developmental initiative where a single village (or a cluster of villages) with high potential for fish farming is selected and transformed into a model aquaculture village. This includes capacity building, infrastructure creation, scientific fish farming, market linkage, and promoting sustainable livelihood through fisheries.

The goal is to empower rural fishing communities, improve income, ensure food security, and build a replicable model of blue economy at the grassroots level.

  1. To create a model aquaculture village that can be scaled and replicated across regions.
  2. To increase fish productivity through scientific and sustainable practices.
  3. To empower fish farmers and fisherwomen with skills, inputs, and market access.
  4. To ensure pond-to-market connectivity using digital platforms.
  5. To create rural employment and reduce distress migration.
  • Identify existing water resources (ponds, tanks, canals, seasonal water bodies).
  • Assess the current level of fish farming, challenges, and socio-economic status.
  • Cluster-based approach for scalability.

  • Eradication of predators and weeds.
  • Liming, fertilization, and pH correction.
  • Introduction of water testing kits (e.g., provided by Aqua Doctor Solutions).
  • Regular monitoring of DO, ammonia, nitrites, etc.

  • On-field and digital training programs on:
    • Pond preparation
    • Seed selection
    • Feeding and disease management
    • Harvesting and post-harvest handling
  • Promotion of best management practices (BMPs).

  • Quality fish seed and feed supply.
  • Aerators, nets, biosecurity kits, liming materials.
  • Construction of mini hatcheries or nurseries (if required).
  • Renovation of abandoned water bodies.

  • Promote use of Matsya Sathi App for:
    • Pond records
    • Advisory services
    • Input purchase
    • Disease alerts
    • Market updates
  • Enable digital payments and government scheme application access.

  • Formation of Women SHGs for value addition (dry fish, pickles, packaging).
  • Train rural youth as aqua doctors or farm service providers.
  • Encourage entrepreneurship through micro-credit and subsidy schemes.

  • Training in hygienic handling, cold storage, and packaging.
  • Connecting farmers to institutional buyers, processors, and retail outlets.
  • Exploring export markets for value-added fish products.

  • Promotion of integrated fish farming (fish-duck, fish-poultry, fish-vegetable).
  • Use of organic fertilizers and probiotics.
  • Water reuse, sludge management, and energy-efficient technologies.
  • Fisheries Department (Govt.)
  • Aqua-based companies (like Aqua Doctor Solutions)
  • CSR wings of corporates
  • Academic institutions and KVKs
  • NABARD, NFDB, FISHCOPFED
  • NGOs and community leaders

  • 2x–3x increase in fish productivity per hectare.
  • 25–40% increase in fisher income within 1–2 years.
  • Women-led microenterprises in fish value chains.
  • Digitally empowered fishers using real-time advisory.
  • Emergence of the village as a model aquaculture hub in the region.

The “Adopt the Village – Aquaculture Model” is not just about increasing fish production—it’s about restoring dignity, creating livelihoods, ensuring nutrition, and building resilience in rural communities through the blue economy. With scientific support, digital tools like Matsya Sathi, and stakeholder partnerships, such villages can become beacons of rural prosperity.
